Install Tollgate

Welcome. This is the first step in getting Tollgate running on your Jira site. By the end of this page you’ll have the app installed and you’ll know where to find it — both the per-project Tollgate tab and the site-wide Tollgate Portfolio page. It takes a few minutes, and you only do it once per site.

You’ll need a Jira Cloud site and permission to install apps. If you’re not a Jira admin, this is the one step you’ll hand to whoever is — everything after it you can do yourself.

Install from the Marketplace

1. Open the Atlassian Marketplace and search for Tollgate.
2. Open the Tollgate listing and select Get it now (or Try it free).
3. Choose the Jira site you want to install it on, and confirm.
4. When Jira asks you to review the permissions Tollgate requests, accept them. Tollgate asks for read access to your Jira work and users, and its own private storage — nothing else. See Roles, permissions & scopes for exactly what each permission is for and why.

Confirm the exact Marketplace listing name, the button label (“Get it now” vs “Try it free”), and whether beta installs go through a sharing link rather than a public listing.

That’s the install done. Tollgate runs entirely inside your Atlassian environment — there’s no separate account to create, no external service to connect, and no data leaves your site.

Find the per-project Tollgate tab

Tollgate appears as a Tollgate tab on the project pages of your software and business projects. (It deliberately stays out of Jira Service Management and Jira Product Discovery projects — Tollgate governs bounded investments, and those project types aren’t the right fit.)

1. Open any software or business project.
2. In the project’s left-hand sidebar, look for Tollgate.
3. Select it. The first time you open it, Tollgate lands you on the Investment Health tab — empty for now, because you haven’t added anything yet.

Note

Across the top of the Tollgate surface you’ll see six tabs: Business Case, Work Packages, Risks, Decisions, Changes and Investment Health. That’s the whole per-project surface — six tabs, on purpose. You’ll meet each of them in the next tutorial.

Find the Tollgate Portfolio page

The portfolio view lives at site level, under the Apps menu:

1. In the top Jira navigation, open Apps.
2. Select Tollgate Portfolio.

This is where every project running Tollgate rolls up into a single ledger, organised by theme. It’ll be sparse until you’ve chartered a few investments — which is exactly what you’ll do next.

Tip

Nothing you’ve done so far is visible to your delivery teams. Tollgate is an above-the-line surface — you can gate who sees it with a governance group later (see Restrict access with governance groups). For now, it’s just you and the sample project.
