Log a risk and apply a MATA treatment
The Risks register is Tollgate’s R/I/O model — Risks, Opportunities, and Materialised risks. This guide covers logging a downside risk (or an upside opportunity), scoring it, and choosing a treatment.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- You need edit rights on the project.
- Risks are scored on impact × likelihood. High-impact open risks feed the Risk RAG on Investment Health.
Log a risk
Section titled “Log a risk”- Open the project’s Tollgate tab and select Risks.
- Choose Log risk or opportunity.
- Set the direction:
- Risk — could harm outcome, or
- Opportunity — could lift outcome.
- Write the description — what the risk is and what triggers it (or, for an opportunity, the upside and how it would materialise).
- Set Impact and Likelihood. Tollgate derives the score and severity band.
- Choose the treatment — the four treatment strategies:
- For a Risk: Mitigate (reduce likelihood or impact), Avoid, Transfer (shift to a third party), or Accept.
- For an Opportunity: Pursue, Enhance, Share, or Ignore.
- Set the Owner and Status (Open / Closed).
- Choose Log risk (or Log opportunity).
Link a risk to a decision
Section titled “Link a risk to a decision”When you approve a treatment that needs a governance decision, record it in the Decisions register — a decision can reference the risk it treats. See Record a decision.
Next steps
Section titled “Next steps”- When a risk actually occurs: Handle a materialised risk.
- Scoring bands and RAG derivation: RAG, confidence & health.
